Course Description

Recent developments in science, including DNA and stem cell research, tissue culturing, smart materials and wearable technology, have a growing impact on how we perceive materials and clothing in design practice. In laboratories across the globe researchers at the boundaries of materials research, electronics, chemistry, and biotechnology are laying the foundations of future applications. The key characteristics of the materials and clothing developed in these labs are their ability to adapt (such as fabrics that adapt their density according to the surrounding temperature), the seamless integration of technology (for example, woven-in solar panels) and the self-organising nature of the design process (such as skin that grows in the form of a leather jacket, independent of any living being).

The various aspects of skin product development are considered from different points of view, as provided by the diverse backgrounds of the course faculty. The topics considered include designation of product goals and formulation design with reference to product performance, factors affecting delivery of actives to the skin, delivery systems, current regulatory issues, methods for assessing efficacy and toxicity of ingredients and finished products, selection of critical ingredients, use of active naturals, considerations and steps in product development. A scheduled workshop encourages questions and facilitates interaction among the participants and course faculty.

It is up to the designers, artists, and developers to determine how this ‘adaptivity’, seamless integration and self-organisation will take place. Designers and artists play an essential role in the way these technologies are formed and the way they are used in society at large. More is at stake here than merely the design of the products. It is also vital to stop and think about the impact that the introduction of these kinds of technologies may have on society.

Dermacare Laser & Skin Care Clinics®, the only physician-based laser aesthetic skin-care franchisor in the nation, has opened a second national training facility for physician franchisees, in the Ahwatukee area of Phoenix, Ariz. This new location augments another training center in northeast Phoenix and accommodates the company's rapidly expanding franchise base and high demand for training.

Before new clinics open, Dermacare requires its franchise owners to complete intensive instruction in the safe and effective use of lasers, BOTOX Cosmetics® and dermal fillers. The physicians, who visit from around the country, receive a mix of didactic instruction (written material and classroom lectures) and hands-on training with volunteers. This five-day course is just one segment of Dermacare's comprehensive three-part training program that all franchisees must successfully complete before they can open for business.

Each clinic offers 3D Skin Perfection, which includes FotoFacial™ for tone (reducing brown spots and sun damage); Laser Genesis to improve texture (mitigating redness, enlarged pores and other problems); and Laser Collagen Acceleration Titan™ (to firm up sagging skin and fine lines and improve related conditions). 3D delivers better results and greater convenience because of the synergy gained from combining the three treatments in one office visit. Other services include laser hair and vein removal, laser wrinkle and acne scar reduction, microdermabrasion, BLU-U acne light treatment and laser tattoo removal.
